I think most of us already know what a special man dad was. When I say us- I mean family and friends. If you didn't know dad then you just haven't had the opportunity to meet him...period. The only stranger dad had was the one he never knew....If that makes any sense to you. You know... I could go on and on about things dad done for us and the impact he had on other people that knew him.... but instead of writing a story of all that.... I'm just gonna be plain and simple about it. Hopefully you will agree.... This is what I miss about dad:
- plaid button up shirts
- striking a match after farting
- driving him around pit roads while I learn to drive
- seeing mom color his hair and chest hair
- I'm old and frail, weak in the tail
- going hunting for squirrels
- going camping
- taking me to watch trains go by
- thinking he was crazy for having about 8 cane poles at the same time while fishing
- waiting with me while I wait for the school bus
- making all the cute girls laugh at the grocery store
- picking up Mr. Lee for church
- trips to Florida
- watching him cut up with uncle Tom
- hanging out at smith creek hunting club
- hugging the preachers wife
- scratching my back with his long finger nails
- watching him and mom shell peas
- tinkering around the shop
- the huge pumpkin he grew with manure
- riding in his lap on the tractor
- cutting grass with him on the back of the seat and me driving
- flirting with the nurses at the hospitals
- crying at my high school graduation while he hugs me
- him reading all those old western books
- it's colder than a well diggers butt in Montana
- taking me to watch the draglines
- tomato and mayo sandwich
- fried chicken with logs (macaroni and cheese) on Sunday after church
- levi garret chewing tobacco
- old chevy truck he called big foot
- old caprice classic he called betsy
- country music
- winston cigarettes
- watching him pull his false teeth out
- that sneaky ole grin
- doing the huckle buck under the apple tree
- having the preacher pin the tail on the mongoose
- delivering food to the shut-in during ingathering
- apples and peaches my butt hole itches
- peaches and plumbs my butt hole's numb
Happy Fathers day dad. Sure wish you were here. I didn't understand what love really is until I lost the chance to share it with you. I will always remember you. Thanks for the memories dad.. your son, Brian
What a beautiful tribute to our daddy. He was one of a kind and a very special person to many people. If everyone could have only experienced just some of the things us children did, they would all understand were you are coming from.
ReplyDeleteBrian, you did it again. You have made us all teary eyes and snotty noses. What a wonderful man he was. He did not have to tell us he loved us because he showed it and we could feel it all the time.
ReplyDelete- doing the huckle buck under the apple tree
- having the preacher pin the tail on the mongoose
-delivering food to the shut-in during Ingathering.
But mose of all, hearing him say "Apples and Peaches my Butt Hole itches, Peaches and Plums my Butt Hole's numb.
Brian, that should not have said anonymous said...don't know how it happened.
ReplyDeleteYou sister told me you had posted this story so, I jumped online at work to read it real quick and here I sit at my desk with tears coming down my face. Your father would have been so proud of you and all that you are working to accomplish but, most of all because of the man you have become. A man that anyone would be proud to know. Thank for sharing your memories.
